Frederick Richard prevails at gymnastics trials, named to Olympic team

Frederick Richard finished with an all-around score of 170.500 as gymnastics team trials for the U.S. Men's Olympic Team wrapped up on Saturday in Minneapolis.
Richard will be heading to the Olympics for the first time. Asher Hong, Paul Juda, Brody Malone and Stephen Nedoroscik will be joining him on the trip to Paris, and Khoi Young and Shane Wiskus are set to serve as traveling replacement athletes.
Malone came in second at team trails, posting an overall score of 170.300. Wiskus landed in third at 169.650, while Juda (168.850) and Hong (167.650) rounded out the top five.
Everyone aside from Malone is a first-time Olympian. When he went to the 2020 Tokyo Games -- held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic -- Malone came up just short of a bronze medal, placing fourth in the horizontal bar.
"We have a chance to win a medal, and that's what we're going to do," Malone said.
Results at the recent U.S. Championships as well as the results in Minneapolis were considered when it came to naming the Olympic team.
